Genuine compassion comes with a price

From a distance, we pour our pity on people – people who crossed the ocean in broken-down boats, ... persecuted, beaten, and abused, half-starved and dehydrated.
But woe to those people when one day they lie under the bridges of our city and need help. Then, the pity of most fades, and pity turns into hatred of strangers.
Pity seems fashionable when it can be worn for free, but when it demands the price of sharing and loving thy neighbor, it is no longer so appealing.
True compassion always has a price.
